Self Storage Hints to Save You Time & Money
First, thank you for considering us for you storage needs. We understand there are many storage places in Philadelphia. The use of Packing accessories such as cartons, Wardrobe boxes, Paper, Tape, Bubble-wrap and Plastic covers will maintain and protect your goods during self storage. A variety of packing accessories are available for purchase at the Locker Room Self Storage unit office. Fill cartons to capacity, partially full or bulging cartons may tip or collapse. Heavy items like books or tools should be packed in small cartons so they are easy to handle. Books should be packed flat, not on their spine. Packing and labeling cartons room by room makes the unpacking much easier, and if you need to find something in your storage unit you will have some idea in which carton to begin looking.

Choosing the Right Size Self Storage Units
5 X 10 Storage Unit
A five by ten stoarge unit is a good size for a couch and a chair, chest of drawers or dresser, mattress set, plus small items and boxes. Outdoor furniture, lawn mower, garden tools, etc. Bicycles and /or motorcycles.
10 X 10 Storage Unit
Furniture from a one-beddroom apartment without appliances, and also small items and boxes will fit well in a ten by ten storage unit.
10 X 20 Storage Unit
We have found that a ten by twenty storage unit will fit furniture from a two-bedroom house and appliances, miscellaneous items and cartons well. Also may be used to store a car or truck and other small items.
10 X 30 Storage Unit
For furniture from a three-bedroom house with miscellaneous items and cartons you will probably need a ten by thirty storage unit. This will hold contents of a 40 Ft. moving van. It also may be used to store a car or truck and other small items. Boats or RV's and some furniture and cartons, depending on the height or the garage doors. If you need help decidign on what size self service storage Philadelphia unit you need, please let us know.

Planning Your Self Storage Space
As a general rule place large heavy items that you can stack upon in your space at the rear of the self storage unit. Then work forwards and upwards with lighter, fragile items. Place those items that you may need to access often in the front of the storage unit. Depending on the goods you have stored you may need to allow for walk ways. Packing in professional self storage cartons will make storing and unpacking easier and safer, saving you time and worry. Professional packing and storage accessories will provide your items with the preparation they need for self storage and maintain their condition for the term of storage.

Furniture Self Storage
Protect your furniture in your self storage unit with drop sheets or similar. Empty the contents of wardrobes, drawers and cupboards to protect shelving and structure of these items. Clothing and personal goods should be packed in strong secure self storage cartons with mothballs or similar product to protect and maintain their condition. Where possible remove the legs from items of furniture e.g., Bed bases, tables etc to avoid damage and save space.

Mowers & Other Machinery Self Storage
Drain fuel and oil from all machinery, this reduces the risk of leakage, spillage and damage to other items in your space. Fuel and oil left in machinery are also a fire hazard.

Dishes & Glassware Self Storage
Place a layer of packing inside the bottom and top of self storage cartons containing breakables. Protect fragile items by wrapping them individually in packing paper (newsprint can be very messy and possibly stain). Nest cups and bowls, stand plates, sauces, platters, casseroles on their edge. Fill any gaps in the cartons with packing e.g.,scrunch paper or linen. This will keep your fragile items well protected and prevent them from moving around in the cartons during transit. Label all cartons containing fragile items and avoid storing heavy items on the top of these cartons. We carry custom glass and dish packing kits.

Appliance Self Storage
Fridges, freezers and other white goods should be thoroughly DRY and CLEAN before placing in your self storage unit. During storage the door should be secured slightly ajar. A deodorizer placed inside a fridge or freezer is also a good idea to maintain freshness. Don't place items inside fridges or freezers as the shelves and linings can be easily marked and damaged.

Mirrors, Windows, Screens & Paintings Self Storage
These items should be protected by packing material e.g., bubble-wrap or in a flat-pack carton. Store them standing on their edge in an upright position (not laying flat) in your storage unit.

Battery Operated Appliances & Toys Self Storage
We recommend that you remove the batteries to avoid damage from leaking batteries.

Stereos, Televisions & Videos Self Storage
Your electrical equipment is very delicate and sensitive and should be handled with care. The original boxes are ideal to repack with, however wrapping items individually in bubble-wrap, packing them in cartons, and sealing the top will offer protection for your electrical items while in your self storage unit. Remember to pack out any gaps in the cartons.

Computers Self Storage
Computers like your other electrical items need special care. The original boxes are highly recommended for packing, however bubble-wrap and good quality packing cartons will do the job. Remember to use some packing or linen in the bottom and top of personal storage cartons, this provides extra protection to the contents, and pack out any gaps. Masking tape is a great tool for labeling the ports and cables.
